Self Portrait - Scott McCloud

BIOGRAPHY:

Scott McCloud (1960- ) has been described by Frank Miller as, "the smartest guy in comics." This reputation has been built on a number of ground breaking ideas.

In 1988 he wrote the 1st draft of the Creators Bill of Rights, a document written in response to prevailing climate where comic creators typically signed away their rights in the characters they created when working for mainstream comic publishers. As Steve Bissette once noted, "...the rights outlined in the Bill would seem to be self-evident, but such is not the case, especially when you're young, unsure of yourself or the ways of the world, or confused by the rhetoric and legalese that the comic book industry too often relies upon."

In 1990 Scott invented the 24 Hour Comic - a challenge to comic creators to produce 24 pages of comics within a single 24 hour period. The 24 hour comic is now considered a rite of passage by many cartoonists. Find out more about the 24 hour comic phenomenon at www.24hourcomics.com.

In 1993 he published Understanding Comics, a revolutionary book which represented a major step forward in developing a theoretical basis for understanding the comics medium... told in a comic format.

Scott McCloud also draws pretty good comics. Between 1984 and 1991 he wrote and drew 36 issues of Zot!, a superhero story with an alternative flavor which featured some unorthodox storytelling and compositions. In 2000, Scott returned to the same characters and themes in his web-comic version of Zot! Online.

About Comics, 2004
Since the first 24 hour comic in 1990, hundreds of cartoonists have taken up the challenge. The results can be energetic, insightful, and have surprising grace. In 24 Hour Comics, McCloud picks nine of the best examples, including comics by Steve Bissette, Neil Gaiman, Matt Madden, and Al Davison.

"Originally the 24 hour comic was a challenge I invented for Steve Bissette when I thought that he was capable of drawing a lot faster than he had been. I challenged him to draw a 24 page comic in 24 hours, and I knew that the only way to get to do it was if I agreed to do it too. So I did it, and then he did it. And he sent a copy to of his to Dave Sim, and then Sim did one. And then, our friend Rick Veitch did one; then Neil Gaiman, Kevin Eastman. It hasn't stopped yet."
Scott McCloud, from an interview, The Comics Journal #179

DC, 1993
A 215-page comic book about comics that explains the inner workings of the world's most misunderstood art forms and examines many aspects of visual communication along the way.

"Understanding Comics is quite simply the best analysis of the medium that I have encountered. With this book Scott McCloud has taken breathtaking leaps towards establishing a critical language that the comic art form can work with and build upon in future. Lucid and accessible, it is an astonishing feat of perception. Highly recommended."
Alan Moore

DC, 2000
The controversial follow-up to Understanding Comics which advocates 12 different revolutions in the way comics are created, distributed and perceived, and how they are poised to conquer the new millennium, with special emphasis on the potential of Online Comics.

"Scott McCloud's Reinventing Comics is a manifesto, and audacious one, irritating as the grain of sand which may one day produce a pearl. It will provoke a lot of arguments, it will make a lot of people think, and it may ultimately change the world a little - which is, after all, what a manifesto is for."
Neil Gaiman
