Self Portrait - Debbie Drechsler

BIOGRAPHY:

Debbie Drechsler (1953- ) has a fine arts background and draws comics for the simple reason that it's the best medium she's found to express herself in. She was originally encouraged to draw comics by fellow cartoonists Richard Sala and Michael Dougan, both admirers of her commercial illustrations.

She used to live in upstate New York but left several years ago to live in California.

ESSENTIAL READING:

Cover - Summer Of LoveSummer Of Love
Drawn & Quarterly, 2002
Lily and her sister Pearl encounter all the triumphs and cruelties of teenage life when they move to a boring suburb and they search for new friends. Summer Of Love is an achingly true portrait of life as a girl and collects the story from Debbie Drechsler's Nowhere comic.

"I've been loving Nowhere. My wife says it's like Lynda Barry with all the fun taken out of it. But I like slow, moody comics, and I think Lynda Barry would be much better with some of the fun drained out."
James Kochalka, letter to Nowhere #4

"Armed with a great ear for dialogue, and a mesmerising style which balances contour and texture, Drechsler is already a master."
The Top 100 Comics, The Comics Journal #210

Cover - Daddy's GirlDaddy's Girl
Fantagraphics, 1996
Daddy's Girl is mesmerising and beautiful book dealing with a harrowing and disturbing subject - a family gripped by repression, denial and fear. Daddy's Girl is a series of short stories collecting Debbie Drechsler's weekly comic strips from the New York Press and is powerful storytelling dealing with a sensitive subject.

"These strips combine a wide eyed straightforward simplicity with a remarkable subtlety that is both cruel and excruciating, and that surely rank with the best autobiographical comics ever done."
The Comics Journal #249
