"...the way he weaves humour, social
commentary, and character development through rapid-fire dialogue
is similarly delightful and definitely should not be overlooked."
The Comics Journal #219
Kyle Baker (1965- ) was born in New York,
USA and studied at The School Of Visual Arts. To pay for his
art school education he worked at Marvel comics, until he figured
that "you're going to art school to learn a trade, but
I was already working at a trade, so I may as well save myself
the money." But his first career in comics was not a good
experience for Kyle. " I figured if I was going to get
pushed around and not own my own work, I may as well go to
Hollywood, get pushed around, not own my own work, and get
paid six times as much." And so, in the early 1990's,
Kyle left New York and headed for Los Angeles to write screenplays
for rest of the decade.
However the desire to create comics remained
with Kyle and finally in 1999 he returned to comics with his
urban romantic comedy You Are Here. "...
I enjoy doing the comic books, and at least you now get to
own it. That's the big thing for me, is owning the work...
But, just generally, comics, I do 'em because I enjoy 'em -
I enjoy doing the work - and because I usually own it. Like
I say, I'm planning in 20 years from now to retire with 20
books on the shelves that will stay in print, and that I'll
own."
He has recently set up Kyle Baker Publishing
with his wife, Liz, and their first publication, Kyle
Baker Cartoonist, was released in 2004, and it contains
some of the funniest cartoons on parenting and kids that you'll
ever read.
In addition to his comic work, Kyle Baker
cartoons have been published in The New
Yorker, The New York Times, Vibe, Esquire and
many other magazines, newspapers and books. His work in animation
has appeared on MTV and he contributed to the Shrek and Looney
Tunes movies.

DC/Vertigo, 1990
Anne is a twenty-something writer living in New York, barely holding her life
together, recklessly tossed about on the sea of fate, cut loose by a series of
coincidences and plot points well beyond her control, used and abused by crazed
ex-boyfriends, sisters, and editors.
"...the rapid fire dialogue still crackles with life while
Baker's hyper-expressive visuals still make this one of the most
approachable graphic novels of the past decade."

"Young and vibrant in New York, like Kyle himself"

He's also been lying like crazy about his secret past. Until now. Within a day
of returning to New York City to sell his apartment, Noel's being chased by the
cops and stalked by a serial killer. To top it off, his unsuspecting fiancee
has followed him to the city. Will she finally find out the truth.

DC/Vertigo, 1988
"It's really very, very funny. And very clever. And very good… Cowboy
Wally is everything you hate about American TV. He's fat. He's stupid.
He drinks too much beer. He ruins people's lives with aplomb and obliviousness… Kyle
Baker mercilessly excoriates TV and the unctuous, meaningless people who are
famous for something they never quite did a long time ago."
