by Art Spiegelman
Pantheon Books
$19.95
On 11th September 2001, Art Spiegelman raced to the World Trade Center,
not knowing if his daughter Nadja was alive or dead. Once she was
found safe - in her school at the foot of the burning towers - he
returned home to meditate on the trauma. "I
hadn't anticipated that the hijackings of September 11 would themselves
be hijacked by the Bush cabal that reduced it all to a war recruitment
poster..." In
his first graphic novel since the groundbreaking Maus,
Art Spiegelman presents a deeply moving, personal and politically
charged account of the events and aftermath of September 11th, 2001.
In a large format book, Spiegelman relates his experiences of the
national tragedy in drawings and text that convey the unfathomable
enormity of the event itself, the obvious and insidious effects it
had on his life, and the extraordinary and often hidden changes that
have been enacted in the name of post-9/11 national security and
that have begun to undermine the very foundation of American democracy.
"What No Towers captures
most vividly in its documentary sections are those moments when
the witnesses begin to comprehend the magnitude of the catastrophe,
when the almost holiday atmosphere of a normal evacuation turned
into horror. It is Spiegelman's ability to recapture the feelings
of the moment before that will make
No Towers an important document in times
to come."

by Steve Bell
Methuen Publishing,
£12.99
Steve Bell's take on the catastrophe that is George W. Bush - from pregnant chads
in Florida to peace in Iraq, gay marriages in San Francisco, and beyond. These
are accompanied throughout by working sketches from Steve Bell's notebooks, original
unpublished artwork, and a coruscatingly funny narrative in the voice of the
strangely simian president, with a cast of other animals, including his pet Prime
Minister.
"If the world will queue up in multiplexes for Michael Moore's
Fahrenheit 9/11 and the anti-McDonalds Super-Size-Me,
surely it would pay to see If... the
Movie. Apes
of Wrath will
do admirably until that hits the screens."

Upton Sinclair's novel The Jungle was
a whistle blowing account of the conditions at the Chicago slaughterhouses
of the early 20th century which created a furore and led to the
passage of the Pure Food & Drug
Act in the USA. Peter Kuper adapts this powerful work in what promises
to be one of his best and most poignant works. View
a preview at Graphic Novel Review #2.
"...Kuper's adaptation makes for a fine compliment to the prose
novel, and a worthwhile work in its own right."

Kuper's expressive illustrations depict the story of giant Rock Man's
volcanic birth and his subsequent attempt to lead a tribe of little
rock people. A dramatic story that rings with the truth of an ancient
myth as well as a sly persuasive political message.
"It's really easy to end up with a dark ending, and it's really
hard to come up with something that has a positive tilt. I generally
feel positive, even though I'm depressed half the time about how
bad things are getting. I work on."
Peter Kuper from an interview at Graphic Novel Review |

Nozomi's had it up to her eyeballs with the record store. If she
has to answer one more dumb customer question or help one more
co-worker with a task they should absolutely be able to handle
on their own, she's going to scream. Seth is a computer tech who
should be doing something else. He doesn't know what that something
else is, but he's certain it has nothing to do with the office
politics and corporate greed that controls the company currently
signing his paychecks. Both are looking for love, but... how do
you find 'the one' when you still haven't found yourself?
Tom Williams was the worthy recipient of the 2002 Day Prize for
his self-published MISA - more
details here - and his artwork has also been seen in Channel
One, Engine, Panel and he has collaborated with Sean McKeever on
Looking At The Front Door. He is definately a comic artist with a
bright future ahead of him. |

Waterwise is the story of two
old friends who are reunited for one night and wander together
through a surreal, vaguely apocalyptic landscape, pondering life,
griping about their circumstances, and trying to connect. Along
the way they explore the nature of dreams, the fragile facade
of civilization and the tenderness of a true friendship. Imagine
a cross between American Splendor and Alice
in Wonderland ...or a cross between Carl Barks
and Carlos Castaneda. |

Josh Neufeld
Alternative Comics
$12.95
Autobiographical cartoonist Josh Neufeld
takes us on a dramatic tour of places as exotic and different as
Thailand, Singapore, and the former Yugoslavia. Highlights include
Neufeld and traveling companion Sari Wilson's stint as extras in
a Chinese-language Singaporean soap opera, a train trip through
war-torn Serbia, and a near-disastrous cave adventure in Thailand.
With gentle humor and a keen eye for the revelatory detail, Neufeld
explores religion and spirituality, politics and personalities,
and the mysteries of everyday life. His stories reflect the backpacker's
conflicted feelings: a yearning for adventure mixed with homesickness
and a sense of disconnection, trapped in a reality constantly in
flux.

by Tom Yeates,
Mark Schultz, Steve Ringgenberg & Al Williamson
Dark Horse
$22.95
Al Williamson stands in rarified air, among the titans of the development of
comics as an art form. Drawing from the tradition of the heyday of book, advertising,
and comic-strip illustration, Williamson brought a command of craft and dynamics
rarely seen, before or since, to a field that had largely valued speed over
skill. As part of an amazing stable of young artists at E.C. in the 1950's,
Williamson helped change the industry forever, but much of his work of the era
has remained hidden. Al Williamson: Hidden Worlds at
last uncovers these gems, stories from his days at Atlas, E.C., Charlton, Harvey,
Dell, and more - many of which have never been reprinted until now, plus
fascinating
sketches and works from his career's infancy and photos from the artist's personal
scrapbooks. Covered in fascination depth by Mark Schultz, Thomas Yeates, and
Steve Ringgenberg and gathered from extensive, lively interviews with Williamson. |

Coll defined the look of
adventure illustration. No one has ever captured the menace of
the Devil Doctor or Athelstan King's journeys into mystic lands
the way Coll did. The struggle between the gallant Sir Denis Nayland
Smith and his arch-nemesis the insidious Dr. Fu Manchu in Sax Rohmer's
classic sagas breathe and move on the page. Every nuance of form
and fantasy one could imagine is evoked in Talbot Mundy's incredible
tale of intrigue, King of the Khyber Rifles . These epic encounters
of heroes and villains locked in combat make up only a small portion
of the nearly 250 illustrations in this, the largest collection
of Joseph Clement Coll's art ever produced. |

MANGA: |
|
by Akimi Yoshida
Viz,
$9.95 Per 200 Page Volume, Bi-monthly
Mature Readers Only
Genre: Hard-boiled action mystery
thriller.
Plot:
1973, Vietnam... A crazed American
soldier guns down his companions mumbling the words "Banana
Fish".
1985, New York City... Nature
made Ash Lynx beautiful and highly intelligent; nurture made
him a cold ruthless killer. Abused as a child, his own father forces
Ash into male prostitution, eventually becoming the main squeeze
of Mafia Boss, Papa Dino. Now, as a gang leader, Ash is trying
to break free, but is drawn into a complex
plot of murder and intrigue when he discovers a dying man uttering
the words "Banana Fish"... the same words his brother
uttered 12 years earlier in Vietnam...
Background:
Originally serialised in 1985 in Shojo Comics and taking ten years, 3,400 pages
to complete. Despite it's strong homosexual undertone, every red-blooded Japanese
male could happily admit to reading Banana Fish with it's high quota of blood
and guts, and clean-line graphics reminiscent of Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira.
